Moving is both an exciting and stressful part of your life. From the search for your next home to the process of packing up all of your belongings, there are a lot of moving gears and components that take place. If you’re dreading the packing part of your big move, here are a few tips that you should be taking into consideration this go around.

Quality Boxes

It will always be the case — quality makes a difference. Moving can be expensive when all of the costs add up, but the one thing that you don’t want to skimp on are the boxes that you use to pack. Even if you’re not moving anything that’s especially fragile, the quality of the boxes that you use will make a difference in the move.

If you decide to purchase cheaper boxes, you may see that boxes cave in when they’re stacked on one another, they are made from a thinner material and the like. Rather than add this as a problem or a stressor of your move, simply purchase higher quality boxes that you know will endure the carrying, storing and moving that are bound to happen during the move.

Right Size Box

Boxes come in all shapes and sizes, but that doesn’t mean that they are all one and the same. While you could go in and purchase boxes of all shapes and sizes, you want to make sure that you are purchasing the right sized box. One of the items that you need to be cautious of box sizes with is books. Though they are a smaller item, they get heavy pretty quickly and when packed in a box that is too big — well you’re going to have a heavy move.

If you’re not entirely sure what size of the box is going to be the best fit, grab a few different sizes and play around with the items that best fit in them. Lighter items can definitely fit into larger boxes and make the move easier. For example, if you have throw pillows that you need to pack up, putting them into a large box will not only take care of multiple items, but it won’t be too challenging to move them. Ultimately, use your best judgment but finding the right size box will make a big difference.

Label Your Boxes

When you’ve finally found your next home and you’re ready to bring your boxes over to the house, the last thing that you want to do is put all of your boxes in one big room, open them up and at that point determine where they belong. This is one of the most common mistakes made during moves and it’s one of the reasons that unpacking is dreaded.

Labeling your boxes while you’re packing is the best way to avoid this down the road. Not only will it help you while you’re packing because you know that all items have a specific box they’ll fit into, but it will make unpacking so much easier. Even if you just label it with the room that the box should go in, you can make the process of unpacking so much easier.

Tape the Boxes

Depending on how quickly the move is coming up, you may wind up throwing the boxes together and taking them on the move that way.  Even though using the flaps of the box is a great way to keep the boxes closed, it’s not the ideal method for stacking. Using tape to keep your boxes closed is great for keeping them shut and making it easier for them to stack.

Aside from that, you are going to want to make sure that you are also taping up the boxes in a way that will stick during the move. Even when you tape the box up, it might not be enough to make it through the move without opening. Tape the box well so that you don’t have to worry about contents spilling out.

Plan in Advance

Lastly, moving happens more commonly than we’d like to admit. This is one of the reasons that moving is so extremely stressful. If you struggle with doing last-minute moves and you’re tired of having to rush all of the packing last minute, then don’t! Planning for a move is one of the best ways to reduce the stress of moving and it works time and time again. From figuring out which rooms you’re going to pack first to hiring a mover in advance, you can make the move much easier on yourself.

If planning is too difficult for you to mix into your day-to-day life, then hiring a team of professional movers is something that you should take into consideration. Not only will they take over the process of moving, but they will ensure that you have as little as possible to worry about when you’re in the process of moving to your next home.

Heavier Items on the Bottom

Organizing your items before you pack them up can be extremely helpful. Once you’ve figured out the items that need to be packed up for one particular room, you’re going to want to pack the heaviest items at the bottom of the box and proceed with the lighter items on the top. This makes it so that all of your fragile items are on the top and won’t be damaged by any of the heavier items in the box. This method also provides you with a nice even box rather than having all of your heavy items in one box and all of your lighter items in another.
